SEBANDON HILL FARM FARROWING

When we decided to focus on Berkshire pigs for farrowing it was difficult at first because Berkshire sows tend to have about 1/2 the typical number of piglets per litter that other breeds of pigs have. It has taken years to perfect our system to ensure it remains as close to nature as possible while practicing regenerative agriculture techniques and to make sure as many of our piglets not only survive the first few critical weeks of their life but to thrive.

While many other breeds of pigs tend to have litter sizes twice that of a Berkshire sow, there is still no other pork like premium pasture raised Berkshire Pork.

CONVENTIONAL FARROWING

Conventionally Raised Pigs are separated from their sows at approximately 3 weeks of age, then placed in confinement areas and fed Corn, Soybean and Vitamin packs. They are eventually placed in 24 square foot pins where they remain until they are ready for processing or artificially inseminated for farrowing. Never touching the grass, fresh water, woods or even fresh air.
